Teofimo Lopez and Jamaine Ortiz will square off on February 8 in a unique Thursday night fight for the WBO and The Ring super lightweight titles. A few days prior to the Super Bowl, the fight in Las Vegas will be aired on ESPN+ in the United States.
2016 saw the gold medallist Lopez enter the professional ranks. “The Takeover” defeated Richard Commey in 2019 to earn the IBF lightweight championship and Vasiliy Lomachenko in 2020 to capture the WBA, WBO, and The Ring belts. Taylor lost the world championship to George Kambosos Jr. in 2021. In 2022, he won the NABF super lightweight title by defeating Pedro Campa. He’s won three in a row since then.
Taylor fought Josh Taylor in June and won both the WBO and Ring titles. This victory helped Taylor rebuild the confidence he had lost during the fight with Kambosos.
“Jamaine is struggling. Because I faced him in the amateur National Golden Gloves Championship in 2015, I am aware of this. I’ll prove to everyone that victorious people never give up on a challenge,” Lopez said. “At the biggest stakes, they surge to the top and shine brightest. This one’s for all the Takeover Express users I know! Let’s once again show the world what real boxing looks like.”

2016, Ortiz made his professional debut. In 2022, Ortiz defeated Mahir Albright and Jamel Herring, the latter of whom was vying for the NABF lightweight title, following a draw with Joseph Adorno. Despite losing to Lomachenko in October 2022, he made a name for himself as a formidable opponent for the reigning champion. In their most recent match, “The Technician” defeated Antonio Moran in September.
“This is the most important fight of my career,” Ortiz stated. It’s my first fight for a world title. I think this fight will bring out the best in me, and I can’t wait to win and return home victorious!”
