Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis assured British welterweight contender Conor Benn today that he will handle the negotiations with his promoter, Eddie Hearn, to line up a fight between them.
Davis (29-0, 27 KOs) appears to be serious about wanting to face the popular Conor. He has done nothing at the pro level yet and looked abysmal last Saturday night when he went 12 rounds with some random fighter Hearn matched him against in Las Vegas.
U.S. fans see no value in Tank Davis fighting Conor Benn, who has shown none of the talents of his famous father, Nigel Benn, especially in his last two fights.
Conor has looked like Superman when walking into a room full of kryptonite because his power is gone, and he’s returned to his old form of struggling against second-tier opposition as he’d been in the past.
Gervonta Davis: “Relax, let me and your boss work. We got it 👌🤝”
Conor Benn: “Offer on its way Gervumpa Lumpa, Gervonta. Let’s go.”
Fan Skepticism and Network Concerns
Boxing fans are still doubtful that Tank Davis will be permitted by his management at PBC, who they suspect will nix his idea of fighting Benn, saying it can’t happen because with a different promoter and fights on a different network, DAZN.
A split broadcast fight between Tank Davis and Benn between Amazon Prime PPV and DAZN likely won’t do big numbers for either network.
Benn isn’t popular enough in the U.S., and Gervonta hasn’t shown the ability to bring in huge buys other than his fight with influencer Ryan Garcia, who many feel was the sole reason for the success of their fight clash last April due to his 11 million Instagram followers.
If Tank Davis is going to fight a guy from a different network, these are the fighters he needs to be facing instead of Conor Benn:
– Devin Haney
– Shakur Stevenson
– Teofimo Lopez
– Ryan Garcia
– Subriel Matias
Tank’s management at PBC will likely give him the bad news about his idea of fighting Benn, letting him know that it can’t happen because it won’t attract interest from U.S boxing fan, an generate the kind of money that he’s hoping to get.
